Today the Gender-Based Violence Recovery Centre (GBVRC), Mombasa Kenya, a centre for victims of gender-based violence, received the label of the UNESCO Chair Sexual Health & Human Rights.

During a press conference in Paris the centre was honoured for promoting sexual health en human rights in challenging contexts. The GBVRC was established in 2007 as a public-private partnership between the International Centre for Reproductive Health Kenya (ICRHK) and the Coast Provincial General Hospital (CPGH) in Mombasa.

In this hospital the centre provides 24/7 care to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence for free. The victims receive medical aid, psychological counselling and legal advice. Since its inception more than 5,000 survivors have been assisted, of which more than half were younger than 15 years. The centre also provides workshops to health care providers, religious and community leaders, the police and policy makers, resulting in a tremendous difference in addressing sexual and gender-based violence issues in Coast province, Kenya.

With the label, the centre wants to strengthen its capacity in Mombasa, Mtwapa and Kilifi and hopes to encourage other governments to replicate the GBVRC model in other sub-Saharan African settings.
