INPAC - INtegrating Post-Abortion family planning services into existing abortion services in hospital settings in China

INPAC (INtegrating Post-Abortion family planning services into existing abortion services in hospital settings in China), is an EC funded FP7 project. The project aims to evaluate the effect of introducing post-abortion family planning (FP) services in existing hospital in order to reduce unintended pregnancy and repeated abortion, and thus to improve women’s health. The project also expects to translate research findings into policy recommendations on health system organization and to improve equitable access to reproductive healthcare and FP service.

Project specific interventions will be developed based on a situation analysis of the effects of the current FP policy and a feasibility assessment of the integration approach. The proposed interventions will be implemented in 30 divisions of mainland China and will be evaluated with regard to its effectiveness. The project will contribute to standardize the post-abortion family planning services and decrease the long-term costs related to abortion in China.

The results of this research will also be of interest to other countries with high abortion rates. The International Centre of Reproductive Health - Ghent University (UG-ICRH), Belgium will coordinate this project, working together with 4 Chinese partners and 2 European partners:

  • Chinese Society for Family Planning - Chinese Medical Association (CSFP-CMA),
  • Fudan University (FU), National Research Institute for Family Planning (NRIFP),
  • West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University (WCSUH),
  • University of Aarhus - Danish Epidemiology Science Centre (AU-DESC)
  • Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM).

The INPAC project will be managed, directed and advised by the following bodies:

  • The Project Management Team (PMT) will be the executive and decision-making body for the administrative and technical management and coordination of the research project;
  • The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) will give external advice related to the scientific and technical development of the research project;
  • The Ethical Advisory Board (EAB) will deal with all ethical issues and measures;
  • The Policy Advisory Board (PAB) will advise the team so that the policy implications and relevance of the research results will be maximized and disseminated.
